Keeping Our Day Schools Strong
Strong Jewish day schools are a vital component of a vibrant Jewish community. Jerry z”l and Paula Gottesman recognized the need to secure these institutions with long-term investment. The Gottesmans were the first to step forward, and more than 100 families have followed.
The Herskowitz Society is the cornerstone of the Greater MetroWest Day School Initiative, widely recognized as one of the leading community-wide day school endowment programs in North America. Through the Day School Initiative—a partnership among the Jewish Community Foundation and Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ and private donors—our community seeks to enhance and secure Jewish day school education by building significant endowments for the future while supporting investments in affordability and excellence today.
Paula and Jerry Gottesman envisioned and provided transformational support for our community’s groundbreaking initiatives in day school education. The Herskowitz Society is named for Jerry’s mother, Sadie Herskowitz Gottesman, and maternal grandparents, Abraham S. and Molly Herskowitz. It represents the legacy of the Herskowitz family’s firm commitment to the continuity of the Jewish people.
A Model of Philanthropic Success
Our community’s Day School Community Fund has become a national model for creating resources for Jewish day schools. The endowment promotes academic excellence and provides long-term funding to subsidize tuition for middle-income families who do not qualify for scholarships but find paying full tuition too financially burdensome.
This initiative also has fostered greater cooperation among our community’s four denominationally and geographically diverse Jewish day schools: Golda Och Academy, a Solomon Schechter school in West Orange; Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, a Modern Orthodox school in Livingston; Gottesman RTW Academy, a pluralistic community school in Randolph; and the Jewish Educational Center, a centrist Orthodox school in Elizabeth.
The generosity of Herskowitz Society members ensures the long-term stability of our Jewish day schools, their diversity, and their academic excellence.
